Ferndale Cherry Blossom Festival – March 18, 2023

Ferndale Cherry Blossom Festival

March 18, 2023
10am to 4pm

This is the third time I’ve been invited to perform at the Ferndale Sakura Festival.  It’s a charming local event that is well attended and that features a wide range of traditional Japanese arts and cultural activities.  I will once again be opening the program by playing a short set of traditional music on the trail among the cherry trees.  This year I’ve also been asked to set up a table inside the pavilion to showcase the shakuhachi somewhat and be available to answer questions.

Here is part of the announcement  provided by the City of Ferndale:

“Sakura Matsuri is a free event for all ages with an emphasis on children that showcases the beauty of Japanese culture through arts and entertainment. Free Japanese refreshments will be served.

Educational and experiential activities will be offered throughout the festival including but not limited to origami (paper folding), ikebana (flower arranging), Paranku Eise drum making, and sumi-e (ink painting) classes.

Delight in Japanese shakuhachi music, the Cascadia Elementary Music Class, haiku poetry, furoshiki {cloth wrapping techniques}, and a kimono demonstration.”

If you happen to be heading up to Bellingham that weekend you may want to make a quick detour and check it out.  And you can find more information about the event here:
